As most of us know the Fly agaric has psychotropic effects when consumed by humans, and the 3 main compunds of interest are: Muscarin, Muscimol and Ibotenic acid. . The first compund we are going to take a look at is: Muscarine. Muscarine or muscarin was first discovered in Amanita muscaria by German chemist Oswald Schmiedeberg and Richard Koppe in 1869, hence the name Muscarine. The A. muscaria fruitbodies only contain trace amounts of the alkaloid and the amount varies from mushroom to mushroom. The compound is found in other mushrooms too, such as Inocybe and Clitocybe species that can contain dangerous levels of Muscarine, like the deadly C. dealbata.  It is also found in harmless trace amounts in many other species.
